so I have played Storm of Souls now for about 2 weeks, I have played it alone with Rise of the Fallen, Chronicles of the Godslayer, and all 3 together. I can say that this set just doesnt fit with any of them. this set causes to many problems for the games. I never though I would straight up have to ban cards in my deck from being played. there seems to be many mistakes that were made in the design of alot of these cards. I banned all but 1 event most the generals (anything above 6 cost with an amazing effect. aka emri, Master Dartha, Adayu, P.R.I.M.E.

overall this set just isnt that fun.

    Matt,
any chance you can elaborate on your claims? How do the cards "not fit" with anything considering most of the abilities and effects were also seen in CotG and RotF? Also, what mistakes were made in design? If you're banning cards out of frustration or supposed "power creep," maybe you should play more or consider how they were meant to work together with the rest of the cards in SOS.

You mention that you banned most of the events and anything over 6. MAYBE the set isn't fun to you because you eradicated all the fun cards from it.

There are supposed to be bombs in this game. They don't provide an insurmountable advantage to one player or another, but they are powerful; they should be for the cost. If there weren't powerful cards, the inclusion of Mystics and Heavies would be completely pointless because you wouldn't need to increase your deck's ability to purchase anything over 5.

I, personally, enjoy Block 1 more than this one (so far). But to say there are "many" design mistakes, especially without providing what you believe those mistakes are, is really short sighted and kind of lazy.

      +1

I, for one, totally enjoy this set — the Mechana, in particular. Their play style is so aggressive. I love that they just decided to rip everything apart and throw it at the enemy — or get other bonuses for doing so. I LOL just thinking about it. The Void decided that runes are actually a good thing, and the the Lifebound and Enlightened are great as always. And the art in this set is just amazing (well done Sabee, well done).

Plus — and this is definitely my own opinion here — coupling SoS with the first block isn't exactly chronologically appropriate. Sure, it's fun to combine them and get crazy, but I enjoy the storyline they're developing here, and having SoS "occurring" at the same time as CotG/RotF muddles things. The situation was meant to be different in SoS. The factions have learned, struggled, etc., and now that a new threat is on the rise, they have to adapt. Hence, a different play style. Again, my own opinion.

Overall, a great set. Much darker and more visceral.

I took out P.R.I.M.E. simply getting a construct or 3 rune is to good plus it can come back. I took out Avatar because buying heros for their honor cost is stupid. most of the people I play with agree with this and what I have done. some have even suggested things such as Adayu. we pretty much dont even use storm anymore. its sitting on a shelf. we arent banning cards because of frustration its coming from seeing how it ruined games from a winning and losing side. you say they are suppose to be bombs but what happens when vedah hits adayu and adayu hits samael.....yea thats no insurmountable advantage. ascension was fine but then they got lazy with the testing of this. I honestly am thinking ascension might have died. its not played to much anymore where I am for the fact it has become more of a chore to play. if you bothered to even read what i said I did give examples of problem cards. if you cant see how they have become a problem then you possibly havent played enough or dont grasp the abilities of cards. we have also taken cards out for being just meh. Arha Templar was taken out because nobody I have seen playing here ever buys them. same with dartha's retreat. I never said I banned all the generals or 6+ costs I was just giving examples of generals and I gave examples of some I banned. if you cant read and grasp what I write then dont bother reading it please.

Cards like Prime and Avatar only become problems if people get their hands on them really early in the game. I find it kind of interesting when you say they got lazy even though most of the idea's for SoS were what they wanted to add since the beginning. I play with my friends all the time and even if we're losing b/c somebody got a good card we still have fun trying to beating their deck and higher cards don't mean you win in some cases. I've seen Prime and Avatar both lose to a mech deck ... hell a friend of mine lost by 1 honor with an enlightenment based deck when I had Avatar. Every card has it use which I think SoS has really brought out. Arha Templar for example can be tossed for using Tower of askara. Dartha's Retreat is actually a really good card if you get it early... like 4th turn Adayu haha. I've actually had better and way closer games with this expansion being added b/c it was usually one sided before. However it is your money and you can decide how to play when you want. Just giving my two cents.

although i havent played the expansions yet, im looking forward to. i do agree if you and the people you are playing with decided to perma banish something, its okay. but i dont agree with banishing anything. the templars are even good to take on your last few turns just for the honor its worth. 1 honor can mean the game. ive outplayed our first copy of ascension to where the board is worn and run down. i also believe that every card has its advantages and disadvantages, and you can see some of it with honor, abilities, and how much the card costs to purchase. besides, its really great when you have a bunch of cards on the board that the other players dont want, and it comes to your advantage

i think this set is a good evolve to ascension.
i ve played more than 100 Game to the first set and expension. Ive also played 30 game to the new set SOS. no cards are abusive or need to banish . the Game is more intresting with the coming of SOS and more dynamic with évents cards. If you combine all three Game he missed évent card ... Only five is not enough. thanks to the team for make this Game and i hope à good future to this game

I feel blessed to get the Storm of Souls as early as I did. My now fiancee' and I have been playing the crap out of this gem. We love the old art, and we love the redone art of the infantry, mystics, etc. The redone game board is worth the purchase of the game alone.

We personally love the progression that the game is taking. Each expansion has added just a bit more complexity. We also feel that with each added pinch of complexity reduces the luck factor in the game. This is a good thing for those of us that play Ascension so avidly.

The only complaint that we have is the vocabulary change. "Destroy" now means to discard. Destroy certainly has a permanent feel to it, and my fiancee' and I always read "discard" instead of destroy for simplicity. We aren't sure as to why that change was made.

Leprechauns are still are favorite cards, along with many of the other promo cards. Keep up the great work!
